Tax Credits Impact PV Production and Shipments

Strong solar photovoltaic (PV) production and shipments are forecast during the first half of 2016, due to installation deadlines, sunsetting solar tax credits and other policy dynamics of the two largest global solar markets, China and the United States. According to IHS Inc., global solar PV installations are forecast to increase by 33% in 2015, to reach 58.7 gigawatts (GW). PV demand will reach 65.5TaGW next year. Read the full article on Fortune.

Storage Advance May Boost Solar Thermal Energy Potential

Engineers at Oregon State University have discovered a new approach for storing concentrated solar thermal energy that could lead to reduced costs and widespread solar use. According to the research, all of the energy produced could be stored indefinitely and used later when the electricity is most needed, or some energy could be used immediately and the rest stored for later use. Find out more about this new innovation from OSU and how this kind of storage could make solar energy more widespread.

Solar Energy Costs Continue To Plunge Globally

Utilities are continuing to choose large-scale solar over new peaking gas plants. Globally, solar PV is beating gas on fuel costs alone, and is acting as a safe hedge against fuel price volatility. Clean Technica unveils two stunning auction results that underscored the extraordinary gains that large-scale solar has made against its fossil fuel competitors.

Solar Ready Veterans

According to the Solar Foundation, about 9 percent of workers in the solar industry are veterans, exceeding the percentage of veteran employment in the overall economy. Government estimates predict that solar-industry jobs will grow by more than 20 percent this year. So, last year the Department of Energy launched the Solar Ready Vets pilot program to provide training for veterans transitioning out of the military and into civilian life with the skills they need to enter the rapidly growing solar industry.

How Trillions Of Tiny Solar Panels Could Power The Internet Of Things

The internet of things, the idea that objects can be interconnected via a global network, will run your home, keep you healthy and even check how much food is in your fridge. It will mean a trillion new “smart sensors” being installed around the world by 2020. But what’s going to power these devices? Organic solar panels might be the answer. Phys.org explores the topic in depth.
